Travis Todd
The story

Travis Todd began his time in the wine world at the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana. During his time there he was promoted to wine buyer and ran the wine program. With the opportunity to develop his palate by tasting some of the world's best wines, the passion for appreciating what he could taste turned into an obsessive quest to find out how to coax flavor and aroma out of the site. A trip to Pinot Camp in 2014 opened his eyes to the great soil in Oregon. Following that trip, he worked a harvest and fell in love with the work. He and his wife Tess made Oregon their home in 2017 and during the next five years he went from cellar hand to Head Winemaker at one of the largest wineries in Oregon.

De la boue began as a passion project in 2019 with 150 cases and has grown into a full time business. Travis farms the 5-acre organic vineyard, makes the wine and sources fruit from our vineyard partners. In 2021 he left his job to pursue de la boue full time.

The vineyards

Gregory Ranch
Yamhill-Carlton AVA

Nestled in the foothills of the Pacific Coast Mountain Range, Gregory Ranch is a 26-acre estate vineyard in the hills of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Chardonnay grows along a west-facing hillside, represented by the slope on the label.

Taking advantage of the natural topography, Pinot Noir grapes are grown on four distinct exposures. The largest block of Pinot Noir is located in a south-facing bowl. Our fruit comes from Block 1, clone AS2 (or 828 or ASW2). Block 1 faces southeast and provides an excellent opportunity for early morning sunlight, while allowing the grapes to stay shielded from the late afternoon heat.

All of our chardonnay fruit comes from Block 7, clone 76. Grown at an elevation of 450 feet in the foothills of the Coast Range, this is a superb place to grow Chardonnay. Marine Sedimentary soils provide a wonderful substrate for the development of complex flavors while the nightly temperature drop from the coastal influence preserves freshness and acidity.

Planted in 2007, Gregory Ranch's viticulture and biodynamic farming programs have been carefully managed to produce the best fruit possible.

Temperance Hill
Eola-Amity Hills AVA

Positioned in the crosshairs of the Van Duzer corridor, the afternoon marine influence blows across an ancient caldera to provide a special place to grow grapes. Volcanic soils allow for perfect nutrition, while the afternoon winds off the coast build thicker skins and smaller berry size - helping to create wines with power and intensity.

De La Boue is proud to add its name to a long list of impressive producers that are working with this vineyard.

The Pines
Columbia Gorge AVA

The Pines Vineyard faces southeast along Mill Creek near The Dalles. Silty loam soils provide excellent water retention in the hot climate as you move east in Oregon. The Columbia River is the engine that powers the weather patterns and regulates the temperature.

The vineyard contains vines from the 1880's and Lonnie Wright planted Syrah in 1994. The hot, dry climate is a great place to grow Syrah and Lonnie has been growing grapes here since 1982.

Vista Grande
Chehalem Mountains AVA

Sitting between 700 and 800 ft. elevation, the east facing vinyard tilts slightly north, preserving acidity as the fruit struggles to ripen.

Volcanic basalt interspersed with windblown Loess and Laurelwood soil distributed over an ancient riverbed provide the perfect amount of water retention in dry years and draining in adversely wet conditions.

Planted to a mix of Dijon and Pommard clones in 1998. Meticulously farmed by Travis using organic practices.
